- Scheduling of Registration
- Students shall be allowed to register in the following order:
- Group 1: Priority Students
- Group 2: Graduate Students
- Group 3: Students in the credentialing program
- Group 4: All other undergraduate students: Appointment times for this group are assigned by the number of units a student has completed. Appointments are set in descending order, so that the students with the greatest number of completed units are first, and the least number of completed units follow.
- Group 5: Unclassified graduate students and transitory students (e.g. cross-enrollees and early entrant high school students)
- Students shall be allowed to register in the following order:
- Categories of Group 1 (Priority) Students
- Category A
- Students who are registered with Disability Services for Students because they would otherwise not achieve their academic goals within a reasonable period of time due to an on-going disability.
- Category B
- Students who participate in intercollegiate sports governed by the NCAA.
- Category C
- Students who would not otherwise achieve their academic goals within a reasonable period of time because they participate in an ongoing, university-sanctioned activity that significantly benefits the university. (See Section III.B for general eligibility criteria)
- The coordinator of the activity must apply to the Priority Registration Committee, on behalf of the students, for possible inclusion in Category C.
- Category D
- Students on a Presidential Scholarship.
- Category E
- Students who are members or former members of Armed Forces of the United States or the State Military Reserve who have received an honorable discharge, a general discharge, or any other than honorable discharge (except for as mentioned in (b) below) within four years of leaving state or federal active duty.
- "Armed Forces of the United States" means the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Naval Militia, Navy, and the reserve components of each of those forces, including the California National Guard.
- A member of the Armed Forces of the United States or the State Military Reserve who received a dishonorable discharge or a bad conduct discharge is not eligible for priority registration for enrollment.
- Students who are members or former members of Armed Forces of the United States or the State Military Reserve who have received an honorable discharge, a general discharge, or any other than honorable discharge (except for as mentioned in (b) below) within four years of leaving state or federal active duty.
- Category F
- Students who are foster youth or former foster youth
- “Foster youth” means people who are currently in foster care.
- “Former foster youth” means people who are emancipated foster youth and are up to 24 years of age.
- Students who are foster youth or former foster youth
- Category G
- Students who are parents
- “Student parent” means a student who has a child or children under 18 years of age who will receive more than half of their support from that student.
- Students who are parents
- Category A
- Implementation
- Coordinators of all groups in Category C who wish to apply for Priority Registration on behalf of their students, including those which currently hold such status, shall apply to the Priority Registration Committee for continuation or granting of priority registration status. The Priority Registration Committee shall then recommend to the President which groups should receive priority registration. Any group that is not granted Priority Registration may re-apply the following year. The Priority Registration Committee shall provide any group that has not been recommended for priority registration with a written explanation of why priority registration was not recommended for the group.
- Eligibility Criteria
- There are three criteria that must be met in order to be granted priority registration under Category C. First, the student must participate in a university-sanctioned activity that significantly benefits the university. This means that the benefits of the activity for the university as a whole are a consideration. However, participation in such an activity is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the privilege of priority registration.
- Second, priority registration must be necessary for the student to successfully participate in the activity. If the student can successfully participate in the program without priority registration, priority registration will not be granted.
- Third priority registration must be necessary to allow a sufficient number of students to participate in the activity to ensure its success.
- Therefore, the committee that decides priority registration status has to consider three main criteria:
- The significance of the activity toward the benefit of the university as a whole.
- The necessity of priority registration in order to participate in the activity.
- The necessity of priority registration for the activity to successfully take place. Only if all three conditions are met will priority registration be granted.
- Priority Registration Responsibilities
- Students who qualify for priority registration must meet with their academic advisors and receive approval for this proposed schedule every semester to maintain their priority registration privileges. After meeting with their academic advisor, the student shall submit the approved schedule to the coordinator or administrator in charge of their priority group. The coordinator or administrator shall submit a list of students in their priority group who are eligible for priority registration to the registrar’s office by the date set by the registrar.
- Review
- The Priority Registration Committee shall re-examine the groups of students with Priority Status every five years to determine whether they continue to meet the guidelines for such status.
- Composition of the Priority Registration Committee
- The Priority Registration Committee shall consist of two faculty representatives, one SSP representative, one student representative (non-voting), and one administration representative (non-voting).
- The specific members of the Priority Registration Committee will be determined by the Student Affairs Committee.
- Priority Registration Committee Meeting Schedule and Application Deadline
- The Priority Registration Committee will meet once a year during the Spring Semester in order to make priority registration recommendations to the President for the following academic year. Applications for priority registration are due to the Priority Registration Committee no later than the 1st Friday in March.
